Rainstorm: A four-storey building in Himachal collapsed like a palace of cards

Himachal PradeshNo. Shimla A 3-storey building collapsed during heavy rains in Chaupal area at. The building housed a branch of UCO Bank, a dhaba, a bar and several other commercial establishments. The local administration had already vacated the building.

A senior state disaster management official said the three-storey building collapsed at around 12 noon in Chaupal Bazaar. However, no casualties were reported as the building was evacuated before it collapsed.

Ramesh Dadwal, chief manager of UCO Bank’s local branch in Shimla, said it was the second Saturday of the month and none of the seven employees working at the bank were present at the time of the accident as the bank on the top floor of the building was on holiday.

According to an employee, some people sitting in a bar on the ground floor suddenly saw cracks in the window glass. Other people located in the building and sitting in the dhaba were also alerted.

Meteorological Department forecast: The highest rainfall is expected on July 9 and 10

Heavy rains are expected in Himachal Pradesh on July 9 and 10, the meteorological department said today. The meteorological department will cover Sirmaur, Solan, Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Hamirpur, Kangra, Bilaspur districts and Shimla in these two days.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast in the surrounding areas.

The meteorological department has warned that rains could hamper traffic, landslides as well as sudden floods due to rising water levels in ditches, rivers and other reservoirs. It is advisable to take adequate security measures to prevent such untoward incidents.

According to the meteorological department, light to moderate rains are expected on the high hills including Lahaul-Spiti and some parts of Kinnaur district.
