An MP-MLA court in Lucknow has sentenced former Uttar Pradesh Congress president Raj Babbar to two years in prison. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 8,500. The court handed down the sentence in a 1996 case. Raj Babbar was accused of assaulting a polling official in 1996. Polling officer Shrikrishna Singh Rana then filed a case against the then Samajwadi Party candidates Raj Babbar and Arvind Yadav in Wazirganj. The court heard its verdict 26 years after the case was heard. Raj Babbar was present in the court during the hearing. Although the sentence is less than three years, he will be granted bail and will not have to go to jail, he said, adding that he would appeal against the decision to the apex court. Raj Babbar is currently the Congress leader. The case is dated May 2, 1996. On the same day, an FIR was lodged at the Wazirganj police station by polling officer Shrikrishna Singh Rana. Rana said in his complaint that when the voters stopped coming to polling station number 192/103 booth number 192, they were going out of the polling station to eat. At that time, Samajwadi Party candidate Raj Babbar along with his associates came to the polling station and abused and beat up the officers present on duty, alleging fraudulent voting.
