It is not yet clear what these people wanted to do with the old notes and who was keeping such old notes. Yes, people were given full opportunity to exchange their old notes after the ban. Whether there is an angle of black money in this case will be known only after investigation. A preliminary investigation by the police revealed that the men had collected old notes from several places and were to sell the old notes to someone else for about Rs 20 lakh. Further investigation is underway. As the news spread on social media, people started questioning whether the old notes were still coming out the back door.
Veteran Congress leader Mallikarjun Khadge, while sharing the news, quipped that despite 99.9 per cent old notes being returned to the banks, the remaining 0.1 per cent are still circulating in the market. He demanded that an inquiry should be held into whether these currency notes were to be exchanged and who was involved in this racket in the government.
