Thousands of protesters struggling against the economic crisis broke the police barricades today and entered the official residence of the President in Colombo.
Some military personnel have also joined civilians demanding the resignation of President Rajapaksa. According to media reports, police used tear gas to prevent protesters from entering the presidential housing on Saturday morning and also did water canon and firing. However, protesters broke through the barricades and entered the presidential residence. President Gotabaya vacated the premises just before the protests began in Colombo.
Sixteen Sri Lankan MPs from Poduja’s Paramuna (SLPP) have called on the President to resign immediately. The Rajapaksa has been under increasing pressure to resign since March. He has been using the president’s residence as his residence and office since protesters seized the entrance to his office in April.
