After earning the trust of a Mumbai diamond merchant, Rs. Surat-based diamond broker Bharat Manjibhai Gangani (25), who absconded with diamonds worth Rs 63.04 lakh, has been arrested by Mumbai Crime Branch Unit-8. He has been ordered to be remanded till August 6 after being produced in a Mumbai court.
Pankaj Himmatbhai Bhadiadra, the complainant in the case, lives in Santacruz and has a diamond levech business in BKC. Acquainted with the accused 8-10 years ago through a business acquaintance. The accused also deals in diamonds in Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad. On October 22, 2021, the accused came to the prosecutor’s office. He said a party in Chennai needs diamonds.
The accused came the next day and took some samples. Called complainant on October 25 and told complainant that the party was satisfied with the sample diamond. Hence the remaining diamonds will be sent by courier. The complainant paid Rs. Diamonds worth 63.04 lakhs were sent by courier. The accused asked to send the diamond money through RTGS as soon as it arrives.
However, despite the passage of time, the accused did not deposit the money. After some time started replying profusely and after that also hung up. Hence the complainant lodged a complaint with the BKC police. As the amount of the fraud was huge, the crime branch started an investigation. Police arrested the accused from Surat on Friday based on the mobile location.
