PUNE: A 16-year-old school dropout was detained on the charge of attacking a food delivery person with a knife at Kirtinagar in Vadgaon Budruk around 7pm on Tuesday in a bid to avoid paying for the chicken biryani he had ordered online from an eatery.
The delivery person, Warje’s Ganesh Keshav Pawar (23), suffered deep cut wounds to his hands as he tried to fend off the sudden knife attack soon after he asked the boy to pay for the food parcel, the Sinhagad Road police said. He was treated at a nearby private hospital.
Pawar later lodged a complaint with the police. A case under Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code was registered.
Inspector Pramod Waghmare of the Sinhagad Road police said, “The boy does odd jobs and stays with his parents, who are casual workers, near the place where the place of attack. It appeared to be a premeditated attack as the boy gave a delivery location near his home instead of his home address while placing the online order with the eatery located at Karvenagar. He carried a knife to the delivery location.”
Waghmare said, “It was a cash-on-delivery order for a bill worth Rs160. The boy pulled out the knife and launched the attack soon after Pawar asked him for payment. He then ran away with the food parcel. We traced the boy based on the phone number he used to place the order.”
