Chennai Egmore railway station redevelopment: Contract likely to be awarded soon | Chennai News

CHENNAI: Southern Railway is likely to award a contract for redevelopment of Egmore railway station in a few weeks. The tender has been opened for Chennai Egmore, said a press release.
The station will get world-class amenities and airport-like features such as separate arrival and departure corridors, bright illumination and hassle-free access to platforms by escalators, lifts and skywalks, intermodal connectivity and other amenities to meet requirements for 40 years.
Work on redevelopment of nine stations – Chennai Egmore, Katpadi Junction, Madurai Junction, Ramesawaram and Kanyakumari, Puducherry, Ernakulam Junction, Ernakulam Town and Kollam Junction – will be carried out by the zone.
Of these nine stations, contract for redevelopment has been awarded to all stations except Chennai Egmore and Kanyakumari. The tender has been called for Kanyakumari station and will be opened on October 26.
Southern Railway has also undertaken a feasibility study for preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for four stations – Kumbakonam, Tirunelveli Junction and Chengannur and Thrissur.

Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) had undertaken a feasibility study for preparation of DPR for eight stations – MGR Chennai Central, Tambaram, Avadi, Coimbatore Junction, Thiruvananthapuram Central, Varkala, Kozhikode and Mangalore Central.
Further 38 stations in Southern Railway have been identified for redevelopment and techno economic feasibility study is to be undertaken after final approval of the Railway Board. And work will be taken up subject to feasibility.
