Indian Premier League (IPL) team Punjab Kings (PBKS) has got a new head coach. Trevor Bayliss, who led the England team to the World Cup, has been entrusted with this responsibility. Bayliss led the England team to win the World Cup in 2019. Now he will replace Anil Kumble in the Punjab team. The 59-year-old Bayliss was earlier the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Will Bayliss end his title drought?
Now Punjab Kings hope that Trevor Bayliss will be able to end the team’s title drought. Australian Bayliss will replace India veteran Anil Kumble, whose contract was not extended as the team failed to reach the playoffs during his three-year tenure.
England won the World Cup
England won the 50-over World Cup for the first time under the coaching of Trevor Bayliss in 2019, Trevor Bayliss was part of the team’s support staff when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. Bayliss became the coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad team in 2019 after winning the World Cup. He was instrumental in helping the Sydney Sixers to the title in the first season of the Big Bash League (BBL) a decade ago. Bayliss has also coached New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield.
Kumble’s bad record as a coach
Anil Kumble could not show his enthusiasm at all while coaching the Punjab Kings team. During his tenure, Punjab Kings played 42 matches, in which he won 18 matches and the team lost 22 matches. Two matches were tied.
The Punjab team reached the playoffs twice
The Punjab team owned by Bollywood actress Preity Zinta has been playing since the first season of IPL. The team was earlier known as Kings XI Punjab. Punjab Kings have made it to the play-offs only twice, including in the 2014 final.
Average performance in IPL 2022
In the 2022 IPL auction, Punjab bought players like Liam Livingstone, Kagiso Rabada, Shikhar Dhawan. Also, before the auction, Punjab Kings retained Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh. Arshdeep Singh hit the headlines in IPL 2022, while captain Mayankhar Agarwal was seen struggling.
Mayank’s removal from the captaincy is discussed
Mayank Agarwal scored just 196 runs in IPL 2022 at an average of 16.33 and a strike rate of 122.5. This performance was in stark contrast to his performances in the last three IPLs. In 2019, Mayank scored 332 runs at a strike rate of 141.88. While Mayank scored 424 and 441 runs in 2020 and 2021 respectively. There were also speculations about the removal of Mayank Agarwal from the captaincy of Punjab Kings. However, it was later rejected by the Punjab Kings.
