  • Omission of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine from the squad
  • The team will play the World Cup without Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard

The West Indies Cricket Board has announced its squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup to be held in Australia on Wednesday i.e. September 14. Under the leadership of Nicholas Pooran, the board selected a total of 15 players, excluding names like Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. This time, West Indies trusted young players instead of experienced players. It is often seen that West Indies stalwarts play in different leagues throughout the year and are included in the squad whenever an ICC event comes up, but this time the board has not done so. The West Indies cricket team will play the T20 World Cup for the first time this year without five of its key T20 players, two of whom were part of the team from the 2007 T20 World Cup.

Chris Gayle-Dwayne Bravo played seven T20 World Cups

Gayle and Bravo are the two players who have been part of the West Indies team from the 2007 T20 World Cup to 2021. Both these players have played all the T20 World Cups so far. This will be the first time this year that both these players will not be part of the team. Both the legends played their last T20 match during the 2021 World Cup.

Kieron Pollard’s retirement from cricket

One name in this list is that of former captain Kieron Pollard. The all-rounder was part of the West Indies team in the last T20 World Cup as well. The 34-year-old Pollard suddenly announced his retirement from international cricket this year. He has played 101 T20 matches for West Indies, scoring 1,569 runs and taking 42 wickets.

Andre Russell-Sunil Narine out of team

Russell and Narine are the two players whose names do not feature in the T20 World Cup squad. The board has not included these players among its 15 players who have played in T20 leagues around the world. Currently both are playing in CPL. Russell has played for West Indies in the 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2021 World Cups. While Sunil Narine has been a part of the 2012 and 2014 World Cup team.
