NCR witnessed an unexpected charge of post-monsoon showers this month, with data from the IMD showing that Gurugram received 80.9mm of rainfall – a surplus of 1,272% against the normal of 5.9mm in October. The showers surpassed even the rainfall figures for August, which is normally the wettest month of the year but recorded a deficit of 65% (65mm) this season.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the post-monsoon showers are over, and the weather is likely to remain dry, albeit with partly cloudy conditions.
Though the daytime temperatures will rise, they will range between 31-33 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Minimum temperatures will start falling gradually from October 15 as the wind pattern changes to north-westerlies, officials said.
Meanwhile, the six-day spell that has made this October the wettest in Delhi since 1956 was caused by an interaction of two weather events – a cyclonic circulation moving in from the Bay of Bengal via the Andhra coast and a western disturbance that brought moisture into the region from the Arabian Sea.
Safdarjung recorded 6.5mm of rain in the last 24 hours till Tuesday morning (8.30am), while an additional 0.6mm was logged till 8.30pm, Tuesday. This took the cumulative rain in the month so far to 128.2mm (against a normal of 15.1mm), surpassing October 2021’s total of 122.5mm.
Several parts of the city and NCR received very light to light rain till Tuesday noon. “The rain intensity will drop further, and Wednesday may see negligible rain. For the next 10 days, weather conditions are not favourable for rain,” said R K Jenamani, senior weather scientist, IMD. Mayur Vihar was the wettest spot in the city on Tuesday, having recorded 11.5mm of rain in 12 hours from 8.30am on Tuesday, followed by Pitampura (3mm) and Sports Complex at Akshardham (2mm).
Meanwhile, the maximum temperature saw a sudden spike of nearly eight degrees since Monday. The weather department expects temperatures to be between 20 and 31 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
