As the battle for Bakhmut intensifies, a senior U.S. official, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity, said that Ukraine must not ‘fixate’ on defending the eastern Ukrainian city at all costs and instead use a window of opportunity to prepare a major counter-offensive against Russian forces. In recent weeks, the industrial hub has become the epicentre of the war in east Ukraine. The senior Biden administration official also said the focus on Bakhmut is hampering Ukraine in the more important task of preparing a widely expected spring offensive to make major gains in areas occupied by Russian troops.
