Russian President Vladimir Putin slammed ‘neo-Nazis’ operating in Ukraine for committing crimes. He reiterated this claim on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Russian president warned ‘forgetting the lessons of history leads to the repetition of terrible tragedies,’ in reference to the Soviet Union’s victory over Hitler’s army. In the past, Putin’s supporters have compared Ukraine’s alleged poor treatment of Russian speakers in the country to the actions of Nazi Germany. This has been contested both by the Ukrainian government and by the Jewish community in the country.
