Three members of the family used the device to track the stolen truck and located it in a parking lot of a strip mall in San Antonio’s Southside neighbourhood, reported the Mirror.

The family told police that they initially attempted to confront the suspect when they saw him inside their vehicle. But the suspect, believed to be in his 30s, was shot dead by one of the family members who assumed that the man had pulled out a firearm.

According to the report, it is still unclear if the shooter will face any criminal charges. Police believe that the truck owners called them to report the theft before the shooting but had then decided not to wait for the officers.

“Our suspect today stole the white truck you see back there. They stole it. Little did he know it was tagged with an Apple AirTag,” San Antonio Police Department spokesperson Nick Soliz was quoted as saying by the Mirror.

On questions of whether the suspect had any weapons with him, the police said they could not confirm it. After the deadly incident, the police also urged people to not take matters in their own hands if their vehicle is stolen.

“If you are to get your vehicle stolen, I know it’s frustrating, but please do not take matters into your own hands like this,” the police said.
