Crop Damage: Crop Damage in Maharashtra: 1.3L Ha, Lower than Last Year | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The crop damage across the state caused by the recent unseasonal rainfall and hailstorms has climbed to 1.3 lakh hectares, according to preliminary estimates. The maximum damage has been in Buldhana district, where crops spread over 63,250 hectares have been impacted.
Though the crop damage is extensive, it is much lower than the 67 lakh hectares of land that had been damaged in 2022 when Maharashtra had faced unseasonal rain, hailstorms and pest attack by snails. Compensation worth Rs 9,981 crore was expected, of which Rs 8,613 crores has been provided so far.
Between March and September this year, unseasonal rainfall affected 16.4 lakh hectares of crop. So far, compensation worth Rs 1,533 crore of the total Rs 1,701 crore has been paid to farmers.
CM Eknath Shinde has directed the administration to prepare panchamanas for the damaged crop, and said the government would provide compensation up to three hectares, instead of the earlier two hectares. “We have given instructions for panchanamas of damaged crops to be completed as fast as possible so the relief can be distributed,” said state relief and rehabilitation minister Anil Patil.
“The grape crop in Nashik has been totally devastated. The government should consider a special package for the affected farmers,” said food and civil supplies minister Chhagan Bhujbal. This is a double whammy for farmers who are already grappling with the drought spread over 40 talukas. The rain and hailstorms will impact the rabi or winter crop, which had already seen a dip in sowing.

Unseasonal rainfall in Gujarat: 20 dead; crops, stored grain destroyed
Unseasonal rains caused by the western disturbance lashed Gujarat, resulting in 14 deaths and flight disruptions due to low visibility. The deaths were primarily caused by lightning during thunderstorms, with the highest fatalities in Dahod, Bharuch, and Tapi. The rains, accompanied by strong winds, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall, led to widespread destruction of crops and damage to property. The assessment of the damage will be conducted once the rains subside. The IMD forecast indicates that the impact will dissipate by Tuesday, with light rains expected in some parts of South Gujarat.
