Errant officials punished, asked to serve disabled students for 5 days | India News

NEW DELHI: In a rare kind of punishment meted out by the Court of the Chief Commissioner of Persons with Disabilities, officials found responsible for delaying by four years the update of the category of a Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd employee from general to PwD will have to render “five days’ service” to students with disabilities at an institution in Delhi.
Chief commissioner (CCPD) Rajesh Aggarwal has taken strong exception to the fact that it took four years to just change the category of the complainant from general to person with disability (PwD). The court in a hearing earlier this month asked MTNL to identify the officials responsible for the delay and send them to Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust where these officials will have to spend five days in service of students with disabilities “for their proper senstisation on the disability matters”. The CCPD has also set a deadline of December 31 for completing this service. A report has also been sought in the matter.
According to the complaint made to CCPD earlier this year, the complainant working at MTNL stated that he has permanent 60% locomotor disability. He was recruited in the general category through open competition but was not disabled at that time. His condition progressed to become a full fledged locomotor disability over time and he also got a certificate for the same from AIIMS. He conveyed this to his office during rotational transfer in 2009. According to the complaint, later in 2019, he put up an application seeking change in category from general to PwD but no action was taken.
