Man accused of killing couple held after 22 yrs


MUMBAI: Police have arrested a man who has been on the run for 22 years for the murder of a couple. The accused, Yashwant Shinde, was arrested from Pune. On December 12, 2001, Shinde and his two accomplices had poured petrol and burnt down the hotel room in which the couple was sleeping because they refused to get their daughter married to him. The fire brigade doused the fire but the couple, Zahrab Rahman and Abdul Rahman, who were in their 50s sustained severe burns and died during treatment.
“The Kurar police arrested Mohiuddin Shaikh, Nagnath Telenge and Venkat Pachawad and during the investigation it transpired that the plot was orchestrated by Shinde who went underground,” said the police.The court acquitted the three as the prosecution failed to establish their role in absence of the main accused.
Recently, the police received information that Shinde was in Pune, informed the police. During further inquiry it was found that Shinde had changed his identity and got married in Pune and used to work as a painter.
