MP court gives 2-year RI to doctor for prenatal gender tests | India News

BHOPAL: A Jabalpur court has sentenced a doctor to two years of rigorous imprisonment for holding prenatal gender determination tests. The convict, Dr P C Minocha, is the director of a sonography centre. The Jabalpur chief medical and health officer (CMHO) registered a case against the doctor after a state-level team inspected sonography centres in Jabalpur on February 13, 2017.

The health officials found that Minocha’s centre hadn’t kept complete records of all the women who had undergone sonography tests. The prosecution presented eight witnesses in court. Based on their statements and the evidence produced in court, the Jabalpur chief judicial magistrate (CJM) held Dr Minocha guilty of violating the Pre-conception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act and sentenced him to a 2-year jail term and a fine of Rs 4,000.
