Mumbai: Retired bureaucrat Mopalwar relieved as MSRDC head

MUMBAI: Veteran bureaucrat Radheshyam Mopalwar is finally on his way out of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) after receiving several extensions in the state’s premier infrastructure agency.
Known to be a trusted aide of chief minister Eknath Shinde, Mopalwar was relieved as vice-chairman and managing director (MD) of MSRDC on Wednesday.
However, he will continue to be director general of the CM’s War Room for Infrastructure Projects.
Officials said that Mopalwar was relieved from his additional charge as MD in the MSRDC and the current Joint MD Anil Gaikwad has been asked to hold additional charge as MD till the state government makes a new full time appointment to MSRDC.
“I had myself requested the CM to relieve me from the additional charge of MD in the MSRDC before Diwali. So I’m expecting to be relieved from there,” Mopalwar told TOI.
An IAS officer of the 1995 batch, Mopalwar retired on February 28, 2018.
He had been heading MSRDC, and a day after his retirement, he was appointed on contract there.
This was followed by subsequent extensions, even in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.
Later in 2022, CM Shinde appointed him as the director general (War Room Infrastructure Projects).
A special post was created for Mopalwar to ensure speedy and time-bound implementation of infrastructure projects across the state.
Mopalwar was considered a favourite among state governments and was known for his administrative skills.
He has been given a record number of over half a dozen service extensions during the past six years.
In the MSRDC, Mopalwar has worked under successive CM’s right from
Currently, Mopalwar is monitoring the Rs 55,000-crore Nagpur-Mumbai super expressway, along with Versova-Bandra Sea Link, Rs 7,000-crore Mumbai-Pune Expressway missing link and Rs 800-crore Thane Creek bridge project.
For Mopalwar, the biggest challenge was the Nagpur-Mumbai expressway, a dream project of the then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is now the deputy CM.
According to a bureaucrat, along with these ongoing projects, new projects, which involve large-scale acquisition of land, were also entrusted to Mopalwar.
In the corridors of power, it is believed that while he may have been at the receiving end of corruption charges, Mopalwar is among a few bureaucrats, who has the capacity to deliver projects in a time-bound period.
