MUMBAI: The weekend in Mumbai witnessed unseasonal rain activity coupled with thunderstorms and lightning. Many residents pointed towards the early morning lighting strikes on Sunday which they said was unexpected.
However a warning had been issued by the IMD hinting towards rain and thunder activity over the weekend. Sunday saw cloudy skies through the day coupled with strong winds.This brought the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of the city to 94 which was satisfactory.
Last year in 2022, the month of November did not see any rain activity, however in the year 2021 the city did witness 30.1 mm of rain.
Starting from the wee hours of Sunday morning rain and thunder activity was witnessed in many parts of the MMR region followed by similar activity in the evening hours.
In the 24 hours ending at 8.30am on Sunday, the rainfall recorded by the IMD Colaba observatory was 9.2 mm & IMD Santa Cruz observatory was 5.2 mm. While a yellow alert was in place for Sunday November 25, indicating thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy wind, for Monday light to moderate rains with thundershowers have been indicated.

Rajesh Kapadia, who runs private weather forecasting blog Vagaries of the Weather, said, that there were three reasons for the heavy thunderstorm that occurred in Mumbai. “A western disturbance trough dropping southwards, severe confluence of winds around east Gujarat region and upper air trough from Maldives to Maharashtra coast (unseasonal), with an embedded circulation in it,” said Kapadia.
A senior MET official from the IMD told TOI, “The moisture incursion has taken place over the state due to the interaction of winds in the easterly trough and a trough in the westerlies. Because of this, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon Nashik, and Buldhana Akola are expected to get rainfall for the next few days.”
