Mumbai: The week began with light rain activity coupled with overcast skies in many parts of the city and the effect of the weather conditions was such that almost all of Mumbai’s air quality monitoring stations recorded ‘good’ air quality index (AQI). Experts pointed out that it was one of the first days after monsoon this year that AQI was in ‘good’ category.
There was a light drizzle recorded in some parts like Dahisar and Thane between Sunday night and Monday morning, showed the Met’s data.Rainfall recorded in 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Monday by its Colaba and Santacruz observatories was 6mm and 2mm respectively both of which fall in the ‘light’ rainfall category.
On Monday morning, the weather bureau issued a nowcast warning around 11 am, indicating light spells of rain very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad for 3-4 hours. However, compared to the weekend, the intensity of rain was much lesser and neither was any thunder or lightning activity reported in any part of the city.
The Met, in its forecast for the week, said that Mumbai would see dry weather conditions starting from Tuesday (November 28) while parts of Palghar, Thane and Raigad could witness ‘light to moderate’ rain /thundershowers on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Met officials said that as predicted, interaction of active western disturbance and trough in easterly along with high moisture feed from Arabian Sea caused fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm and hailstorm activity over north Maharashtra, which includes Mumbai, and Marathwada yesterday.
“The intensity of adverse weather to reduce from today (Monday). However light to moderate rainfall at some places accompanied with isolated thunderstorm and lightning very likely over north Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha during November 27 to 29 with significant reduction thereafter,” said IMD in a post on X.
Meanwhile, the rain led the air quality index of the city to drop to the ‘good’ category in many pockets of the city.
On Monday evening the average AQI of Mumbai was at 51 (good category), many other parts of the city, like Bhandup31, Colaba 62, Malad 41, Worli 26, Mazgaon 37 and Navi Mumbai 46.

Delhi pollution: Air quality dips into ‘severe category’ today, AQI crosses 400
The air quality in Delhi worsened from ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ on Wednesday, as per CPCB. Anand Vihar and Jahangirpuri recorded AQI levels of 405 and 428 respectively. Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and Dwarka Sector 8 also fell into the ‘severe’ category with AQI values of 404 and 403. On Tuesday, SAFAR-India reported an AQI of 323. The AQI scale ranges from 0 to 500 or higher, with ‘severe’ indicating 400-500 or above. Recently, the CAQM lifted restrictions on trucks, buses, and construction activities in Delhi.
