With workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel for 15 days and recent setbacks during the ongoing mission, rescuers have started becoming anxious over the “uncertainty” and possible long haul. Rations are being stockpiled and the oxygen pipe extended for the 41 stranded workers, a senior official in the rescue mission said on Sunday.
An official, requesting anonymity, told TOI: “The mountain is fragile and it is understandable the evacuation would be slow. What’s worrying is that despite having the finest experts and state-of-the-art equipment, the process is getting delayed.” He added: “Now, we’re getting anxious because we don’t know how long this mission will continue.”
Another official, who is closely observing the rescue work, said, “The 41 workers did so well thus far… Now, ration is being stockpiled and the oxygen pipe extended — all part of precautionary measures undertaken just in case debris starts falling during vertical drilling or from any other entry point and communication with the workers snaps.”
The rescuers are not only keeping themselves motivated to make the mission a success, but also constantly providing all support to families of stranded workers, who have stationed themselves in hotels and lodges near Silkyara village.
Workers of different agencies and departments at the site have played a key role in boosting the morale of the trapped men and families for a fortnight and after a cycle of fits and starts.
Some pointed out that even the nearest market for basic items is in Mahergaon, over 3km away from the collapsed structure.
One added that the terrain along with harsh climatic and living conditions have started taking a toll. “There is a growing unhappiness among family members too. It is very much visible when we interact with them,” another official added.
