MUZAFFARNAGAR: A 55-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to her head after a sub-inspector‘s gun “accidentally went off” inside the Aligarh police station on Friday. She was immediately rushed to JN Medical College for treatment where she is said to be in critical condition.
The incident took place on Friday when the victim, Ishrat Begum, a resident of Turkman Gate locality in Aligarh, had come to Nagra police station to meet SI Manoj Sharma for passport verification to go on a pilgrimage (Umrah) to Saudi Arabia.CCTV footage which has now surfaced online, purportedly shows the officer inside the police station cocking his pistol at the woman when suddenly it goes off and hits the woman in her head. The accused SI fled the spot after the incident.
SSP Kalanidhi Naithani immediately suspended the SI. Based on a police complaint filed by the victim’s son, Ishan Ahmed, a case has been registered against the cop under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder). “I had taken my mother to the police station for passport verification. The SI told us that we will have to wait for an hour. When we requested him to expedite as my mother is a diabetes patient, he got angry and cocked his pistol at her. After being hit by a bullet, she fell on the ground,” Ishan stated in his complaint.
The SSP said, “For unknown reasons, a bullet was fired from SI Manoj Shar-ma’s pistol which hit the woman standing inside the pol-ice station… Further investigation is on. Action will be taken accordingly.”
