Bihar Government: Reply in 4 weeks: High court notice to Bihar government on quota hike PIL | India News

PATNA: The Patna high court directed the Bihar government on Friday to respond within four weeks to a PIL challenging the constitutional validity of increased 65% reservation of state government jobs and seats in state-run educational institutions for SC, ST and backward-class applicants, reports Dev Kumar Pandey.
Petitioners Gaurav Kumar and Naman Shreshtha have questioned the Nitish Kumar government’s quota hikenotified on November 21, on twin legal grounds.
The PIL admitted by the division bench of Chief Justice K Vinod Chandran and Justice Rajiv Roy states that any such increase in the percentage of reservation is tantamount to violating the SC’s ruling on the matter. The petition also terms the Bihar Reservation Amendment Bill “arbitrary”.
The changes were carried out based on the state government’s caste survey. The PIL alleges that the proportion of certain castes in Bihar’s population had been increased to create room for higher quota.
