BJP MP Varun Gandhi on Friday praised former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, saying that a “true leader” does not take “sole credit” for victory, as he referred to India’s win against Pakistan in the 1971 war.
Varun Gandhi shared a letter written by his grandmother to the then Army Chief General Sam Manekshaw following the historic victory in the 1971 war.
“A true leader knows that it is the entire team that wins, and knows when to be large-hearted and not take sole credit,” the BJP MP said.
Commemorating the victory which resulted in the independence of Bangladesh, Varun Gandhi wrote, “On this day all of India salutes both these great Indian treasuresâ€æ”
The BJP MP’s comments came against the backdrop of speculation that he is getting closer to Congress circles, as Varun Gandhi has been avoiding BJP meetings recently.
Last month, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Varun Gandhi, who are cousins, had a brief “unexpected meeting” at the Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand.
Though both the leaders dismissed the political significance of the meeting, it also triggered speculation in some quarters about his political intentions.
In September this year, Varun Gandhi took a dig at his own party’s government in Uttar Pradesh over the suspension of the licence of Amethi’s Sanjay Gandhi Hospital after the death of a patient. He took to social media platform X and said “resentment against a name (name) should not spoil the came (work) for people”.
