NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Friday extended the judicial custody of NewsClick founder-editor Prabir Purkayastha and HR head Amit Chakraborty for 21 more days in a UAPA case for allegedly receiving foreign funds to spread Chinese propaganda.
Special judge Hardeep Kaur of Patiala House courts extended their remand till December 22 when they were produced in court on expiry of their 30-day custody.
Purkayastha and Chakraborty were arrested in October by Delhi Police’s special cell following a series of raids conducted in the wake of allegations made in a NYT article that NewsClick was being paid to support Chinese propaganda.
A money laundering case filed earlier by the ED is also pending against NewsClick, with allegations including overvaluation of shares, diversion of funds and violation of FDI regulations. The Delhi HCdirected the ED not to take any coercive action against the website and its founder.
