Ahmedabad: The newly constituted board of management and the executive council of the Gujarat University (GU) in its first meeting on Friday suspended three professors and ordered an inquiry against another professor for allegations of financial irregularities. The suspended teachers included Mukesh Khatik, the previous head of the political sciences department who was suspended for harassmentof a female teacher of the same department.Sources said that about a decade ago, Sarman Zala, who was also the head of GU’s political science department was also suspended from his post for similar allegations. Sources said that in that complaint, the female colleague had complained against Zala and Khatik.
Sources said as Khatik was politically influential, the university had not taken action against him then. However, as Khatik continued to harass another female colleague, the woman had approached the GU vice-chancellor and later after her repeated complaintsthe GU management had to forward her complaint to the women’s development cell of the university.
The women’s development cell had found him guilty of misbehaviour and the report was submitted to the board of management. Khatik was finally suspended, and the board also ordered setting up an inquiry committee consisting of a retired judge to investigate the matter further.
Sources said that Khatik as a guide has many political leaders as his PhD students.
