Mahua Moitra moves SC against Lok Sabha expulsion on ethics panel’s report

KOLKATA: TMC leader Mahua Moitra moved the Supreme Court on Monday against her expulsion from the Lok Sabha based on the ethics committee’s report that held her guilty of “unethical conduct” and “serious misdemeanours” in the cash-for-query row. Her 15-page petition was filed online. Sources said it was likely to be heard soon.
Mahua, elected to Parliament from Bengal’s Krishnanagar, had been consulting lawyers on the issue for some time. There was no word from the expelled MP on the legal move.
On Friday, CM Mamata Banerjee had alleged procedural lapses in expelling Mahua from Parliament, saying not allowing her to defend herself was a violation of natural justice. Asked if Mahua would be fielded in LS polls, she said, “I do not see any reason why she can’t be the party candidate. She has been made the TMC president in Krishnanagar.”
On December 8, after a heated debate in the LS over the panel report during which Mahua was not allowed to speak, parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi moved a motion to expel the MP from the House for “unethical conduct”, which was adopted by a voice vote.”
