BHOPAL: Two drunken friends pushed a third out of a speeding vehicle and drove on, unaware that he was entangled in the seatbelt, police in Madhya Pradesh‘s Sehore district said on Tuesday. The victim, a father of two, was dragged along for 25km on the Bhopal-Gwalior highway and killed.
It was only when passing motorists began calling ‘Dial 100’ to report the horror that a police patrol car gave chase and intercepted the vehicle at a toll gate.By then, victimSandeep Naqwal‘s body had been ripped to the bone and his skull smashed. The left side of the sedan was streaked with blood and flesh.
Cops arrested Sandeep’s cousin, Sanjeev Naqwal (53), and a friend, Rajesh Chadhar (38), who was driving the car, and booked them for murder, said Sehore ASP Sameer Garg. “The man was dragged for more than 25km before they were stopped. Both accused maintained that they didn’t know Sandeep was entangled in the seat belt or that he was being dragged to his death,” the ASP added.
The three men, residents of Gwalior‘s Awadhpuri, were returning from a funeral in Ajmer. They took the route via Bhopal, though it’s longer by about 60km. After having dinner in Sehore district, a heated argument broke out between Sandeep and his cousin inside the vehicle, which worsened to the point where Sandeep was forcibly ejected. After pushing him out of the car, Sanjeev and Rajesh sped on, apparently unaware that Sandeep had got entangled in the seat belt and was being dragged along. His screams went unheeded or were drowned by the wind and engine noise.
Passing motorists were horrified by the sight. The first call to police was logged at 9.50am. Witnesses said the car was speeding at 100kmph. Some motorists tried to alert Sanjeev and the driver but in vain. The duo, allegedly drunk, paid no heed, said police. A police patrol set off after them and caught up at Duraha toll plaza, around 35km from Bhopal. Even the cops couldn’t bear to look at the mangled corpse.
