Rajat Patidar has become the 23rd player to make his one-day international (ODI) debut for India since the start of 2021, becoming the 254th cap for the Men in Blue ahead of the 3rd ODI between South Africa and India in Paarl.

Patidar made his IPL debut in 2021 for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) but his returns were not something to write home about, scoring just 71 runs in four innings at an average of 17.75 and a strike rate of less than 120.

His fortunes turned around in IPL 2022 as he went on to score 333 runs in eight innings, averaging 55.50 and striking at over 152. He scored a century, too.

Patidar’s fearless strokeplay in the IPL, as well as his consistent performances at the domestic level, earned him an India call-up in October 2022 for the home ODI series against South Africa.

Now that he has finally made his debut for India and no longer remains an uncapped player, Patidar is set to receive a bump in his IPL salary.

You must be wondering why and how. Don’t worry, The Sporting News answers those questions for you.

Rajat Patidar set to receive INR 50 lakh in IPL 2024

Patidar, who was brought in as a replacement for Luvnith Sisodia in IPL 2022 for the price of INR 20 lakh, is now set to receive a pay bump as he will earn at least INR 50 lakh for IPL 2024.

A new incentive plan has been devised by BCCI, which will reward uncapped players between two IPL seasons if they earn an India cap and play a certain number of games.

As per the fee regulation:

  • Before the start of any season, the League Fee payable to any uncapped player is less than Rs. 50 Lakhs; and
  • Such a player is then capped or achieves 5 or 10 Caps at any time during the period from the end of one season up to the start of the next season.

Then

  • The League Fee payable to such Player for such next season and any subsequent season if such player’s contract is extended by the relevant franchise shall be Rs. 50 Lakhs for so long as such player has 1 Cap, Rs. 75 Lakhs for so long as such player has 5-9 Caps and Rs. 1 crore if the player has 10 Caps or more; and
  • If such player is subsequently traded then before such trade his League Fee shall be deemed to be determined under paragraph (c) above. It is clarified that to calculate the Salary Cap, if the player is traded, then any increase in a player’s League Fee will apply to the new franchise’s Salary Cap. However, if the player remains with the existing team, then such an increase will not affect the Franchisee’s Salary Cap and the Salary Cap will remain the same as it was before the increase in Player’s League Fee.

Now, given that Patidar has earned one cap, he will receive ‘at least’ INR 50 lakh for IPL 2024. If he played at least four more games and less than or equal to eight games, he would earn INR 75 lakh. If he plays nine or more games for India from here on, he will earn INR 1 crore.
