Rs 20 lakh fines collected in MMR from polluting vehicles in a month | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: During the month-long special drive to tackle pollution in MMRthe motor vehicles department has found that out of the 10,675 vehicles, which were inspected by the officials, 1,795 were polluting the air. “We recovered a fine of Rs 19.47 lakh from the polluting vehicles,” a senior Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) official said.
The official said following the directives of the ministry of forest and environment to tackle air pollution in Mumbai, a special month-long drive was undertaken between November 8 and December 8, 2023.Maximum number of polluting vehicles – 388 – were found in Pen inRays district, followed by 340 in Mumbai-West, 297 in Kalyan, 279 in Thane, 240 in Vasai and 107 in Mumbai-East. “We found that ‘pollution under control’ was missing or they did not check the pollution in the past. They were fined as per rules,” the MPCB official said.
One of the important directives of the MOEF is that all trucks and vehicles transporting construction material and garbage should be properly covered by tarpaulin. “During our drive, we booked 732 vehicles, which were transporting construction material, but they were not covered,” he said. The largest number of trucks – 317 -were found in Borivli, followed by Mumbai-East – 194 and Thane – 137. As per BMC records, an estimated 10,000 MTs construction and demolition waste is generated in Mumbai per day.
