Ram Gopal Varma recently shared the story of the fight between Subhash Ghai and musician AR Rahman. Talking to Film Companion, he said that during the shooting of the film ‘Yuvraj’, there was a heated argument between the two. After discussion, A.R. Rahman gave his song to another filmmaker instead of Subhash Ghai, for which he also won an Oscar.
AR Rahman Music Director of Subhash Ghai’s ‘Yuvraaj’
Ram Gopal Varma said that AR Rahman was hired as the music director for the 2008 film ‘Yuvraaj’. Director Subhash Ghai asked him to compose the music of the song, but due to busy schedules, he could not deliver the song on time. When there was a delay in making the song, Subhash Ghai called AR Rahman and told him a lot. In response to which AR Rahman said, I am in London. Leaving for Chennai, will come back and see you at Sukhwinder Singh’s studio.
When Subhash Ghai reached Sukhwinder Singh’s studio on the appointed date, he found him composing music. When Subhash Ghai was asked about the music, he replied that AR Rahman had asked him to compose the music for the song. Hearing this, Subhash Ghai got angry. He felt that due to pressure, AR Rahman started getting work from Sukhwinder instead of doing the work himself. He felt that Sukhwinder had told him by mistake.
After some time AR Rahman reached the studio, he asked Sukhwinder in front of Subhash Ghai if the song was ready or not. AR Rahman heard the song composed by Sukhwinder and asked Subhash Ghai how he liked the song.
Hearing this, Subhash Ghai got angry. He shouted, I am paying crores of rupees to make you my music director and make tunes from Sukhwinder. How dare you say that in front of me. If I Sukhwinder Why should I pay you to have a tune made by? I would have signed them. Who are you to take money from me and make a song for Sukhwinder?
After listening to Subhash Ghai, AR Rahman told him, Sir, you pay me in my name, not for my music. If I support this song, it’s my song. You knew when you came here, but how do you know who got the rhythm music from. Maybe that music was composed by my driver or someone else.
Before ‘Yuvraaj’, AR Rahman and Subhash Ghai worked together in ‘Taal’ and ‘Kissna’.
AR Rahman won an Oscar for the same song
AR Rahman and Subhash Ghai had an argument and the song was not kept in the film. A few years later the same song was used by A.R. Rehman in the film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, titled ‘Jai Ho’. AR Rahman won an Oscar for this song. Some time ago Subhash Ghai also said in an interview that the song ‘Jai Ho’ was made for the film ‘Yuvraaj’, but it did not suit the theme of the film, so he removed it from the film.
Although the 2008 film ‘Yuvraaj’ was a huge flop at the box office, its songs were well-liked. The film’s song ‘Tu Hi To Meri Dost Hai’ was a chartbuster
