Jitendra Kumar on comparisons between his 'Panchayat' character and Shah Rukh Khan's role in 'Swades'

In the popular series ‘Panchayat’, Jitendra Kumar plays Abhishek Tripathian engineering graduate who accepts a low-paying job as a panchayat secretary in a remote village. This character has drawn comparisons to Shah Rukh Khan‘s role in the 2004 film ‘Swadeshi‘. In the movie, Khan portrays Mohan Bhargava, a NASA scientist who returns to India and works to bring electricity to a rural village. Both characters are highly educated professionals who move to rural areas and confront the challenges of village life.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Jitendra Kumar said that when they were initially writing and listening to the story, they doubted that there were any similarities between the two characters. They thought that people might highlight the fact that his character comes home for a couple of days and decided to use it as an inspiration. Jitendra further added, “In Season 1, the friend also refers to this, but we added those elements. But it never appeared as an obstacle. We used it well. So, it never crossed our minds that it is similar to SRK’s character. In fact, I love Swades, so I was really excited to do something in the same zone.”
The storyline of ‘Panchayat’ centers on Abhishek Tripathi, who secures a position as the Sachiv of Phulera village. However, as the narrative unfolds, village politics are navigated by Abhishek, and he experiences familial bonds and more. The second season’s finale was marked by the heartbreaking death of Prahlad Pandey’s son, who was serving in the Indian Army.
