Along with Nancy Pelosi, 6 US MPs have also come to India to meet the Dalai Lama.

Former US Speaker Nancy Pelosi is on a 2-day visit to India. He will meet Tibetan religious leader Dalai Lama at Dharamsala. Pelosi landed at Kangra Airport in Himachal Pradesh at 12:30 PM. A delegation of 6 American MPs is also present with them.

Nancy had previously visited India to meet the Dalai Lama in May 2017. Then China warned the US against interfering in the Tibet issue. Pelosi has long supported Tibetan independence.

A bill related to Tibet was passed in America on June 12. It was said that the US would respond to the lies spread by China around the world about Tibet. Meanwhile, American officials will also reject China’s claim that Tibet belongs to it.

Pelosi escorted 24 fighter planes when she went to Taiwan
After the passing of this bill, this visit of the American MPs is being considered very important. In fact, China has always opposed America for supporting Tibet. In such a situation, this visit of Nancy Pelosi can increase the controversy.

Pelosi is the same US leader whose visit to Taiwan in 2022 has been threatened with war by China. Nancy’s plane was then escorted by 24 advanced fighter jets from the US Navy and Air Force. During this time, China also conducted military exercises by surrounding Taiwan from all sides.

Nancy Pelosi said during her 2008 visit to Dharamshala that the US would continue its work to protect human rights in Tibet. He helped pass the ‘Tibet Policy Act’ in Parliament in 2019. Through this act, America raises its voice to protect the identity of Tibet. The Dalai Lama’s stature in America has increased because of Pelosi.

China’s stance on Tibet changed after the Communist government came to power
The dispute between China and Tibet is age old. China says that Tibet has been part of China since the 13th century, so it has rights over Tibet. Tibet denies this claim by China. In 1912, Tibet’s religious leader and the 13th Dalai Lama declared Tibet independent.

China did not object at the time, but about 40 years later the Communist government came to power in China. This government’s expansionist policies led China to invade Tibet in 1950 with thousands of troops. Chinese occupation of Tibet continued for about 8 months.

Finally, in 1951, Tibetan religious leader the Dalai Lama signed a 17-point agreement. After this agreement, Tibet officially became part of China. However, the Dalai Lama does not accept this treaty. He says that the agreement was made under duress.

The Dalai Lama left Tibet and came to India amid the dispute with China
In the meantime, the anger of the Tibetan people against China began to rise. After 1955, violent demonstrations against China began throughout Tibet. In the meantime the first uprising took place in which thousands of people lost their lives. In March 1959, news broke that China was going to take the Dalai Lama hostage. After this, thousands of people gathered outside the Dalai Lama’s palace.

Finally, the Dalai Lama escaped from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet and arrived in India disguised as a soldier. Government of India gave them asylum. China did not like this. It is said that this was also a major reason for the Indo-China war of 1962. The Dalai Lama still lives in India. Tibet’s government-in-exile runs from Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh.

Elections are also held for this government. Tibetan refugees around the world vote in elections. Refugee Tibetans must register to vote. During elections the Tibetan people elect their President who is called ‘Sikyong’. Like India, the term of parliament there is also 5 years. The headquarters of the Tibetan Parliament is in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.

Only Tibetans with a ‘Green Book’ issued by the ‘Central Tibetan Administration’ have the right to vote and contest elections. This book acts as an identity card.
