Tokyo. The US says it is reorganising its military command in Japan as the two countries face the biggest strategic challenge from China. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says this is the most significant change since the military alliance was formed 70 years ago. Washington and Tokyo say they are concerned about the rapidly changing security environment in the region. Along with this, both countries have accused China of using force to change the status quo in the East and South China Seas, around Taiwan and throughout the region.
This new formation of the US and Japan military command has come at a time when China is increasing its nuclear weapons and Russia is strengthening military ties with North Korea. But the biggest question is how will this new alliance change the security relationship between the US and Japan? And how will China react to this? Anyway, this announcement was made after security talks between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and their Japanese counterparts Yoko Kamikawa and Minoru Kihara in Tokyo.
Austin told the media after the ‘2 + 2’ dialogue that the US will upgrade the number of its troops as well as the headquarters of the Joint Force in Japan. This will be the most significant change since the deployment of US forces in Japan and one of the strongest improvements in our military relations with Japan in 70 years. The ministers said in a joint statement that the new command structure will be implemented along with Tokyo’s own plans to establish a joint command for the armies by March 2025.
This big step is one of the many measures taken to deal with the serious threats arising regarding the security environment. In which many threats posed by superpower China have been mentioned. In this statement, China’s provocative behavior in the South and East China Sea, joint military exercises with Russia and the rapid expansion of its nuclear weapons were criticized. The ministers said in their statement that China’s foreign policy tries to reshape the international system for its own benefit at the expense of others.
