During this, devotees performed special prayers and prayed for the prosperity and happiness of the country. Durva Abhishek is a unique tradition that has been going on for 38 years. Durva Abhishek started in the year 1985 and is continuing even after 38 years.

Pandit Umesh Joshi, founder of the ‘Jyotish and Karmakand Parishad’, an organization of priests and patrons in the temple of Ashtamukhi Lord Pashupatinath, said that India was liberated from the clutches of the British on 15 August 1947, when according to the Hindu calendar, it was Chaturdashi of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Shravan. Since Sunday was Krishna Chaturdashi of the month of Shravan, according to tradition, Independence Day was celebrated by performing Durva Abhishek in the temple of Ashtamukhi Lord Pashupatinath, and the priests also prayed for the welfare of India by offering prayers in the temple of Ashtamukhi Lord Pashupatinath.

Eight Faced Lord Pashupatinath
In Durva Abhishek, Independence Day is celebrated according to Hindu calendar by specially decorating the idol of Lord Pashupatinath in the temple of Ashtamukhi Lord Pashupatinath in the whole of India. During this time, a lot of enthusiasm is also seen among the devotees. 2 to 3 quintals of Durva is used to decorate the idol and the sanctum sanctorum. Along with this, Gomti Chakra, green pumpkin seeds, green cardamom and mawa along with bhang are used in the decoration. Shami leaves are also applied on the sandalwood paste.
