Houston weather: Storm chances climb for the weekend, ABC13 Weather Watch posted for Beryl next week

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Southeast Texas will see increasing temperatures and rain chances heading into the long holiday weekend as we keep a watchful eye on Hurricane Beryl. With the possibility of heavy rainfall from Beryl next week, we’ve put you on an ABC13 Weather Watch starting Monday and continuing through Thursday of next week. We’ll get to that in a moment, but first let’s get you through the rest of the holiday weekend forecast.

Friday started off warm with temperatures around 80 degrees and with mostly clear skies. Rain chances climb to 30% in the afternoon as temperatures warm to near 100. The sea breeze front coming in from the Gulf will pop up a few showers as usual, but we’ll also see a boundary pushing in from North Texas that could trigger some late afternoon and evening showers north of Houston.

How’s the rest of the holiday weekend look?

Storm chances will climb to 40% on Saturday as the boundary stalls out north of I-10 and bubbles up more rain clouds in the afternoon heat. Rain chances are higher than 40% in counties northwest of Harris county, with those locations carrying a 60% chance of rain. The boundary lifts away from us on Sunday, which will bring rain chances back down to 30%. High temperatures both days will be in the mid 90s with an afternoon heat index making it feel like 105 to 108 degrees each day.

How will Hurricane Beryl impact Southeast Texas next week?

At this time we expect rip currents will first reach our Gulf-facing beaches on Sunday. Monday is the day we will be looking for Beryl to make landfall, most likely on the South Texas coastline. The exact landfall point remains uncertain, and we cannot rule out a landfall closer to Matagorda Bay at this time. Assuming it makes landfall closer to Brownsville, then the outer rainbands could reach parts of Southeast Texas starting Monday night. We expect the potential for heavy rainfall to increase Tuesday and Wednesday as deeper tropical moisture arrives behind Beryl. Because Beryl’s exact path through Texas remains uncertain, all of this is subject to change, so we encourage you to stay looped in through the holiday weekend.
