Houston weather: Storm chances climb for the weekend, ABC13 Weather Alert posted for Beryl next week

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Beryl is currently a tropical storm over the Gulf of Mexico. The NHC has been shifting the track to the east showing a landfall somewhere around Matagorda Bay of at least a Category 1 hurricane late Sunday into Monday. Hurricane Watches have been issued from the Rio Grande up to San Luis Pass, and a Storm Surge Watches has been extended even farther up the coast to include Galveston Bay.

Outside of Beryl, we are also expecting a boundary to drop in from the north tonight into Saturday and this boundary could help initiate some showers and storms in SE Texas mainly in the afternoon to evening. These storms will be capable of producing torrential rains and lots of lightning. A Flood Advisory is in effect for Houston and areas north and west of the city until 4:15 p.m. Radar estimates that 1 to 2 inches of rain fell since 2 p.m. with more expected throughout the afternoon. Street and area flooding are the primary concerns for impacted areas this evening.

How’s the rest of the holiday weekend look?

Storm chances will climb to 60% on Saturday as the boundary stalls out north of I-10 and bubbles up more rain clouds in the afternoon heat. Rain chances are higher than 60% in counties northwest of Harris County, with those locations carrying a 70% chance of rain. The boundary lifts away from us on Sunday, which will bring rain chances back down to 30%. High temperatures both days will be in the mid 90s with an afternoon heat index making it feel like 105 to 108 degrees each day.

How will Beryl impact Southeast Texas next week?

Beryl will make landfall somewhere along the Texas Coast between Matagorda Bay and Corpus Christi early Monday morning. This is looking like a high impact storm for Southeast Texas, and we need to be prepared for the impacts of this hurricane to arrive as early as Sunday night and continue through Monday. Because we believe the brunt of the impacts will be felt on Monday, that is now an ABC13 Weather Alert Day. How much rain could Beryl bring?

A Flood Watch has been issued for much of Southeast Texas, including Houston, for Sunday evening through Tuesday morning. Excessive rainfall and runoff from Beryl could flood rivers, creeks, streams and flood-prone areas. 5 to 10 inches of rain, possibly more in spots, is expected to fall within this area. Street flooding will be a big concern, especially Monday, where water levels could quickly rise and leave motorists at risk.
