Beijing: Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu may have become a slave to China. He is giving more importance to China than India. Mohammed Saeed, who is attending the 15th World Economic Forum (WEF) in Dalian, China, said in an interview to CNBC International TV, “President Muizzu has reiterated that India remains our closest neighbor.” In response to a question about the “tension” in relations between India and Maldives, Saeed said, “India and Maldives have had good relations for a long time. India is one of the most important tourist destinations for us, especially in terms of tourists coming from India. India has a lot of investment in Maldives, especially in the tourism sector.”
Muizzu came on a tour to India
On his return to Male from New Delhi, President Muizzu described his official visit to India to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Modi as an ‘important success’ for the Maldives. Muizzu also stressed that strong relations between the two countries will bring prosperity to Maldives and Maldivian citizens. Mohammed Saeed is the first Maldivian minister to visit China. Earlier in January, President Muizzu visited Beijing.
