Leicester famous for footwear manufacturing after light engineering
The city of Leicester, known as a geographical and historical county of England, is situated on the River Sore and the Grand Union Canal. The Grand Union Canal connected Leicester to London in the early 19th century and later, in 1832, a railway connected the small Leicestershire coalfield town to the north-west. After that there was rapid industrial development. The city’s oldest industry is hosiery and knitwear, but after light engineering in the 19th century, Leicester became famous for footwear production.

Church of St. Martin—first built by the Normans and then rebuilt and enlarged between the 13th and 15th centuries. Leicester Cathedral was created in 1927 after the creation of the Diocese of Leicester by the Church of England. Other historic structures in the city include the Guild Hall and Trinity Hospital. The clock tower is the identity of Leicester
The center of attraction in the city of Leicester is the clock tower, from which the shopping street leads. The city has undergone a lot of redevelopment since World War II. During the 20th century, Leicester experienced massive immigration and became one of Britain’s most ethnically diverse cities. Especially in the 1970s many South Asian refugees came from East Africa through the Africanization policy and settled in Leicester. Most notably started by Idi Amin in Uganda. The migration was carried out in the 1990s by a significant number of citizens of Somali origin, and in the early 21st century, large numbers of immigrants from Eastern Europe arrived in the city.
