New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the G7 summit in Italy after becoming the Prime Minister for the third time. PM Modi and his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau will come face to face here on Friday. The Indian government has said in a statement that the government reiterated that India’s main issue with Canada is the political space given to anti-India elements advocating violence and extremism. Now everyone’s eyes depend on Trudeau’s attitude. India will take its relations forward only with Trudeau’s attitude.
According to a TOI report, PM Modi will arrive in Italy on Thursday, where he will attend the summit of the most economically advanced nations for the fifth time in a row as the leader of an invited country. He will address issues related to the global south as well as underline the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which is at the top of the G7 agenda along with the Gaza conflict.
The prime minister will attend the G7 outreach session on Friday and will also hold a number of bilateral meetings with the G7 and other invited leaders. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra on Wednesday confirmed only a meeting with the Italian prime minister and host Giorgia Meloni, as he said the list of bilateral meetings was still being finalised. The possibility of a meeting with Trudeau was not ruled out.
Briefing reporters on Modi’s G7 visit, Kwatra said, “The main issue is that Canada provides political space to anti-India elements who advocate extremism and violence. We have repeatedly conveyed our concerns to them and we expect strong action from them.” The summit is being held at a luxurious resort in the southern region of Puglia.
