New Delhi. To make 5G more affordable and accessible in India, American chip company Qualcomm on Tuesday introduced Snapdragon 4G Gen 2 chipset. The company claimed that this chipset will reduce the price of 5G smartphones to Rs 8,000 or less.
The Snapdragon 4S Gen 2 mobile platform claims to make 5G accessible to over 60 crore smartphone users in India. It is designed for entry-level handsets. Qualcomm officials said at the ‘Snapdragon for India’ event here that the chipset will bring down the prices of gigabit 5G smartphones to below US$99 (about Rs 8,290).
According to IDC data, the lowest-priced 5G smartphone in India is currently selling for Rs 9,999. The chipset will initially be adopted by Xiaomi and its other brands. The first commercial product is expected to be announced before the end of the year.
Qualcomm India President Savi Soin said that access to 5G will be a key to furthering India’s digital transformation journey and strengthening its presence as a global player. He said, “With the success of 5G in India, our effort is to ensure that every Indian gets the benefit of affordable devices.” He said that the company aims to provide affordable 5G solutions to establish connectivity without any barriers in remote areas.
