Putin said that “the fact that Trump, as a presidential candidate, has declared that he is ready and wants to stop the war in Ukraine. We take this absolutely seriously. I am certainly not familiar with possible proposals about how he plans to do this. That is the main question. But I have no doubt that he means it sincerely, and we support it (the idea of ending the war).”
In April, The Washington Post reported that Trump had privately considered a peace plan that would allow Putin to retain control of Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, and the Donbass region, which is partially occupied by Russian forces. Reuters also revealed last month that two key Trump advisers had suggested a plan to pressure Ukraine into peace talks by threatening to withhold further US military aid.
The Russian president also dismissed allegations that Trump was paid to keep quiet, calling it a mere “political struggle”. “It is clear to the whole world that prosecuting Trump… is merely the use of the judicial system during an internal political struggle,” Putin said. He further said, “His alleged leadership in the field of democracy is being burned.”
