New Delhi. Former Indian football legend and famous coach Subhash Bhowmick died in Kolkata after a long illness. He was 72 years old. In his career, Subhash also represented the country’s two big football clubs East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. From 1970 to 1985, he represented India in many international tournaments. In 1970, he was also a part of the Indian team that won the bronze medal in the Asian Games.
His family sources said that he was suffering from kidney disease and diabetes for a long time and breathed his last at 3:30 am. They said that he was undergoing dialysis regularly for the last 3 and a half months. He had also undergone bypass surgery about 23 years ago.
A career surrounded by controversies
After retiring from the game, he pursued a career in coaching. He first joined Mohun Bagan as a coach and then became the most successful coach of East Bengal. During his tenure as coach, East Bengal won the ASEAN Cup title in 2003. He was called the ‘Jose Marinho’ of the Kolkata grounds.

Bhowmick started his career at the age of 19 with Rajasthan Club. This right winger dominated national football for a decade due to his dribbling skills. He scored a hat-trick against Philippines in the Merdeka Cup in 1971. His career was also surrounded by controversies, as he was arrested and sent to jail in 2005 after being found guilty in a bribery case.
