Washington. US Vice President Kamala Harris has crossed the threshold of votes required to become a candidate for the presidency in the vote of the Democratic Party’s delegates. After this, Kamala Harris said that she is proud to be a potential candidate. However, the party’s virtual roll call continues ahead of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago later this month. Kamala Harris is the first black woman and the first South Asian woman to join the White House race on behalf of a major American political party. If she defeats Republican candidate Donald Trump in November, she will be the first woman president of America.
Kamala Harris was being considered the next candidate ever since US President Joe Biden announced his decision to step down and withdraw from the presidential race last month. Kamala Harris also supported Biden’s decision and went ahead unopposed in the immediate virtual roll call. Many potential candidates also eventually supported her. On Friday afternoon, Kamala Harris was formally nominated after securing the support of 2,350 delegates of the Democratic Party, which is the threshold required to earn the nomination.
‘Trust in the promise of America’
After this, Kamala Harris said that ‘We believe in the promise of America and this is the purpose of this campaign. We are in it, we are on the road and it is not going to be easy, but we are going to get it done.’ Democratic Party sources have said that 99 percent of the total 3,923 delegates – or participants – are planning to vote in favor of Kamala Harris. This roll call of the party started on Thursday and will end on Monday.
‘First black female candidate’
In the US, the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of parties are usually chosen at their party conventions. It is worth noting that 59-year-old Kamala Harris was born in Oakland, California. She is the first Democratic candidate to come from the western state in the party’s nearly 200-year history. She rose from state politics from San Francisco District Attorney to California Attorney General and then US Senator. However, before dropping out of the race, Joe Biden easily won the Democratic primary. But 81-year-old Biden faced increasing pressure from within the party to withdraw after his poor performance in the debate against Trump in June.
