New Delhi. Upcoming AFC Women’s Asian Cup(AFC Women Asian Cup) are set to make history as for the first time in India, Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used from the quarter-final stage of this continental competition. The tournament will be played from January 20 to February 6 at three venues in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune. VAR will be used in matches after January 30. In this way, this VAR technology will debut in the tournament.
During the tournament, 6 video match officials will be able to view 7 different live camera feeds. VAR can review four categories of decisions which include goal/no goal, penalty/no penalty, direct red card and giving red or yellow card to the wrong player. This technology will be used till the final to be held on 6th. Preparations for installing cameras for this technology have started at the respective venues.
Apart from the stadium on the match day, similar VAR ‘setup’ will be installed at the referees’ training venue and ‘simulators’ will also be available for the referees at their hotels. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said that the AFC is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the highest standards of refereeing. Hence, several technical tests are being conducted at training venues and stadiums before VAR is officially introduced in the country.
