Today (15th December) Kharmas will start with the change of Sun’s zodiac sign. Today is Dhanu Sankranti i.e. Sun is entering Sagittarius. Kharmas will remain till 14th January (Makar Sankranti). On Makar Sankranti, Sun will enter Capricorn and Kharmas will end. Now for the next one month, Sun God will remain in the zodiac sign Sagittarius of his Guru Jupiter. Kharmas is also called Malmas. In Kharmas, there are no auspicious times for auspicious works like marriage, mundan, housewarming, sacred thread etc.

Malmas (Kharmas) comes twice in a year in Hindi calendar. Once when the Sun is in Sagittarius and second when the Sun is in Pisces. The lord of Sagittarius and Pisces is Jupiter.

Astrologer of Ujjain Pt. Manish Sharma says-

There is a mythological belief that during the time of Kharmas, Sun God remains in the service of his Guru Jupiter, due to which he is not able to be present in any auspicious work. Auspicious works begin with the worship of Panchadevs. Panchadevas include Ganesha, Shiva, Vishnu, Goddess Durga and Surya. Surya is engaged in the service of his Guru and due to this he is not able to participate in auspicious activities like marriage, sacred thread, housewarming etc., due to this there is no auspicious time in Kharmas for auspicious activities.
