The Supreme Court on Thursday said that alimony is not meant to make a woman’s financial condition equal to that of a man (husband), but to provide a better standard of living.
The top court also said-

Women should be conscious that laws are made for their welfare. They should not be used as a means to punish, threaten, dominate or extort husbands.
The bench of Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Pankaj Mithal has made this comment at a time when there is anger in the country over the suicide case of AI engineer Atul Subhash. Before committing suicide, Atul Subhash had released a video message and letter to the President, in which he had raised questions on the misuse of laws made for the benefit of women.

The wife had claimed in the court that the husband had property worth Rs 5 thousand crores.
Actually, a couple had filed an application for divorce in the Supreme Court. Information came to light that both of them got married in the year 2021. After this, fights started between the two. The woman had also filed a case of rape and unnatural sex against her 80-year-old father-in-law. The person was a citizen of America and ran an IT consultancy business there.
In this case, the wife had claimed in the court that her husband has a business worth Rs 5 thousand crores. He also has many properties in America and India. The woman also told the court that her husband had given her a property worth Rs 500 crore and a house in Virginia while separating from his first wife.
SC approves divorce
The Supreme Court approved the divorce of both of them on the grounds that their relationship could no longer be improved. In its decision, the court said that the husband should make full and final settlement and give Rs 12 crore to the wife within a month.
The court said-

We have objection to the way property is distributed equally to the other party in the name of maintenance or alimony. It is often seen that in their applications for maintenance or alimony, parties highlight the assets, status and income of their spouses. Then she wants half the property from her partner.
The court also asked the question that if the husband becomes poor after separation, will the wife give equal rights to her property to the former husband?
