For the first time in the year 2023, a case of Dinga Dinga virus was reported in Uganda.

More than 300 people have been infected with Dinga Dinga virus in the African country Uganda. Most of them are women and girls. The biggest impact of this mysterious disease has been seen in Bundibagyo district of Uganda.

According to news agency Monitor, when the patient gets infected with this virus, severe shivering starts in his body. This tremor is so intense that it appears as if the patient is dancing. If the infection is severe, the patient may even become paralyzed.

According to Bundibagyo District Health Officer Kiyita Christopher, this virus was first detected in 2023. Since then the Ugandan government is investigating it.

The Ugandan Health Department has not yet provided any information on deaths due to Dinga Dinga virus. The department has advised people to take medicines on time. People who have been infected have been admitted to the government hospital in Bundibagy.

According to the report, till now there is no vaccine to prevent this disease. According to health officer Kiyita, the infected people are being treated by giving antibiotics. It is taking about a week to recover from this.

Kiyita has described herbal medicines as ineffective in treating the virus and has asked people to come to the hospital for testing and treatment. Kiyita said,

The health department has advised people to stay clean to avoid this disease. They have also been forbidden from coming in contact with any infected person. Dr Kiyita said that apart from Bundibugyo, cases of the virus have not been found in any other district.

Along with this, samples of many suspected people have been sent to the Health Ministry team. These samples are yet to be examined. The disease is being compared to the ‘dancing plague’ that spread in France in 1518. People got infected with this disease and used to tremble for many days.

How did the disease get its name Dinga-Dinga?

This disease spread in Uganda has not yet been scientifically named. According to news agency Monitor, the people there call the virus ‘Dinga-Dinga’ in common language. Which means ‘strong trembling like dancing’.

Patience Katusime, an 18-year-old patient who has recovered from the virus, told news agency Monitor that despite being paralyzed, her body kept shaking uncontrollably. He first felt weakness and later became paralyzed.
