The Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government has approved a designated space within the “Rashtriya Smriti” complex to build a memorial to former President of India, late Pranab Mukherjee. The “Rashtriya Smriti” complex is a part of the Rajghat complex. Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee gave this information. Mukherjee died on 31 August 2020.

Called on Hon’ble PM @narendramodi ji to express thanks & gratitude from core of my heart 4 his govts’ decision 2 create a memorial 4 baba. It’s more cherished considering that we didn’t ask for it. Immensely touched by this unexpected but truly gracious gesture by PM 1/2 pic.twitter.com/IRHON7r5Tk

Sharmistha Mukherjee said, “Baba used to say that state honors should not be asked for, but should be given. I am very grateful that Prime Minister Modi did this to honor the memory of Baba. It does not make any difference to Baba that Where is he now – beyond praise or criticism. But being his daughter I cannot express my happiness in words.”
Why did Sharmistha get angry at Congress?
Earlier, Sharmistha Mukherjee had criticized the proposal of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, which demanded a separate memorial for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Kharge had written a letter to PM Modi making this demand. Dr. Manmohan Singh died on 26 December 2025 at AIIMS, Delhi due to prolonged illness. He was 92 years old.

He also accused the Congress leadership of misleading him on this issue during that time. According to him, a senior Congress leader told him that this is not for Indian presidents.
The Congress leader he mentioned termed his argument as “complete nonsense”, and also claimed that he had learned from his father’s diary that the CWC meeting was called on the death of another former Indian President, KR Narayanan. And the condolence message was drafted by none other than Pranab Mukherjee.
‘He is yet to mature…’, what did Pranab Mukherjee write about Rahul Gandhi in his diary?
