Many customers of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) are becoming victims of fraud (phishing). This message is being sent to the customers that if they do not update their PAN card details, their bank account will be frozen. These messages contain a suspicious link to ‘Update’ PAN details and customers are being directly victimized through these tactics.
The fact check team of the government’s Press Information Bureau (PIB) has confirmed that these messages are fake. India Post has never sent this message and people have been warned not to click on any such link nor share any personal details.
How does this fraud work?
Fraudsters send fake alerts claiming that in case of not updating PAN details, the customer’s India Post Payments Bank account will be blocked within 24 hours. These messages often appear to be genuine, but are part of a large-scale scam aimed at stealing sensitive personal and financial information.
Phishing is a type of online fraud, where cyber criminals make people their victims to obtain personal information like password, PIN.
How to avoid such fraud?
Fraudulent messages often reference legitimate institutions. Always be wary of hasty and urgent requests. Apart from this, never share your PAN, Aadhaar or bank details with any unknown person. Keep an eye on your bank accounts so that unauthorized transactions can be detected immediately. Understand the different types of fraud.
